Looking at the size, I can’t believe I have a very small mother. Hearing stories of her when she was younger, and looking at her old pictures, I imagine her size similar like mine. What happened? Aren’t people usually got fatter when they get older? Hrmm… :-?
Mama told me stories of how very hardworking people are in the old days. How people in the old days sew baju kurung the old fashion way. How they do everything very neat and carefully. Unlike nowadays, always do things in hurry and tailors who take shortcuts in making clothes in order to finish more to get more income.
Then Mama took out her old baju kurung to show me how it’s done back then. Mama also showed me the kain for the baju kurung where she wears it with a bengkung instead or a ready to wear waist band. That’s how the butt grabbing story comes about.
Mama tells me about how my aunt garbs her behind the other day, saying that Mama has small and nice figure. Touching Mama’s stomach and comparing it to hers, and complains about her saggy stomach due to pregnancy. My cousin replied, “Makcik perut molek.”, who is also aren’t too happy with her figure. My aunt and my cousin has four and there children each, now in their thirties.
What’s Mama’s secret? One word. Bengkung! Mama told me, when she was younger, my grandmother taught her and her sister to wear bengkung. She’s been doing that since she was younger, so no wonder lah! Some of you might not have mother or grandmothers who wore bengkung. Maybe this can explain, my late grandparents are from Indonesia. So it figures. My Mama also practices taking Jamu back then. Do you notice how the Indonesian stay healthy and maintain their figure?
So if you want to stay fit, practice taking supplements and use girdle to help. I believe these two are modern substitute for Jamu and Bengkung. (Please consult you doctor before taking any supplement or doing anything for health purposes)
Sheesh!, how did a baju raya story end up as a story about Bengkung and Jamu? (^_^)
